If you’re reading this, chances are you’re curious about menopause, whether it’s right around the corner or already making its presence known. Don’t worry - while menopause is a significant transition, it doesn’t have to be daunting. In fact, with the right approach, it can be a time of empowerment and self-discovery.

So, what’s Menopause  anyway?

Menopause usually hits between 45 and 55, but it can surprise you earlier or later. It’s officially a thing when you haven’t had a period for 12 months straight. The lead-up to this, known as perimenopause, is where the real action happens, with fluctuating hormones and the onset of symptoms. After menopause, you enter postmenopause, a phase that lasts for the rest of your life.

What to expect when you’re NOT expecting?

Menopause symptoms are as unique as each woman experiencing them, however, there are some common symptoms that women experienced during the years, some of which you might know and have heard of, and others you may not have. Some are:

  1. Mood Swings and Emotional Changes: Hormones on a roller coaster can cause irritability, anxiety, and mood swings.

  2. Cognitive Changes: You might feel like you’re in a bit of a brain fog, forgetting where you left your keys or the name of that actor.

  3. Sleep Disturbances: Thanks to night sweats and other symptoms, your beauty sleep might get interrupted.

  4. Vaginal Dryness and Discomfort: Lower estrogen levels can make things a bit dry and uncomfortable down there.

  5. Hot Flushes and Night Sweats: Suddenly feeling like you’re in a sauna? Yep, that’s a hot flash. They can strike anytime, anywhere. Often followed by sweating and a racing heart. Not exactly fun, but manageable!

  6. Irregular Periods: Your cycle might start playing hide and seek before it disappears completely.

  7. Physical Changes: Weight gain, thinning hair, and drier skin are all part of the package.

Interestingly, a lot of people do know and have heard of hot flushes and night sweats, but often they can be some of the last symptoms that women experience, and some of the earlier symptoms of perimenopause are often overlooked or attributed to being too busy, too stressed, or burnt out.

Embrace the Changes

You’ve got this! Here are some tips to help you manage menopause symptoms and stay fabulous:

  1. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): HRT can work wonders for many women by replenishing estrogen and progesterone levels. It's important to discuss the benefits and risks with your doctor.

  2. Emotional and Psychological Support: Menopause can be an emotional ride. Sharing your experiences with friends, joining a support group, or talking to a therapist can make a big difference. You’re not alone—there’s a whole sisterhood out there!

  3. Vaginal Estrogen: For dryness, low-dose estrogen creams, rings, or tablets can be a lifesaver. But always ask your doctor.

  4. Healthy Diet and Exercise: Fueling your body with nutritious foods and staying active can help manage weight, boost your mood, and strengthen your bones.

  5. Alternative Therapies: Embrace holistic approaches like acupuncture, yoga, and meditation to reduce stress and enhance well-being.

  6. Non-Hormonal Medications: Some antidepressants, anti-seizure drugs, and blood pressure medications can help with specific symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings. Talk to your doctor to see if it’s right for you.
